FAQ

What's the story behind Lightn?
Our cofounders were working at VC-backed startups, and feeling overwhelmed by all the low-level tasks consuming their time. They would have loved an intern, but didn't want to write a JD, sift through resumes, or have to figure out how to occupy someone 20hrs per week. They wanted the process of getting a "nano-intern" for a small project to feel as easy as calling an Uber.
We also believe that providing students (who we call "Lightners") 10-15 "nano-internships" during their college experience can help students discover meaningful careers & companies far sooner. All while leveling the playing field in University job recruiting.

How does confidential information and data stay safe?
See our security and confidentiality page here.

Can I choose my Lightner?
No. However, we work our magic behind-the-scenes to match you with someone amazing. This adds speed & simplicity while reducing bias.

Can I request the same Lightner for additional projects?
Yes, you can request the same person for a new task. However, we can’t guarantee they’ll be available. If that's the case though, we'll match you with someone equally terrific.

How much does it cost?
Lightn uses simple, straightforward pricing and compensates students fairly. All projects are a flat $22/hour.

What's the Lightn Guarantee? And what happens if something goes wrong or my Lightner goes MIA?
We're like Trader Joes; if you don't like what you got, you let us know and get a full refund.

How does the rating system work?
At the end of the project, you give your Lightner a rating, and they give you one too. We use ratings to make better matches, help Lightners improve, and keep the experience great for everyone.

What are the best types of projects/work to delegate?
Lightn works best for mini-projects & tasks that you don't want to do, but a smart, competent generalist would be amazing for. Tasks that are repetitive, easy to start, and clearly explainable in a narrated screenshare video. In other words, things you'd give to a traditional intern or assistant, but that can require some brainpower.

What are some examples of good use cases?
See the a big list of some pretty great use cases here.

How do payments work?
Lightn only charges upon successful completion of the project. You can keep a card on file (either business or personal), or if you'd prefer the invoice go to someone else, there's an option for that too.

What do you need Lightned?

Lightn works best for ~5-50 hour work projects/tasks you want to take off your plate (i.e. things you'd give an intern). Ideas/examples here

*no credit card needed to start. The first hour is always free, and if your match isn't a fit, you pay nothing.

How it works

What's Lightn?
Lightn helps you easily send small projects (generally 5-30 hours) to incredibly smart, responsible college students. In minutes. So you can get your time back, be less stressed at work, and focus on the big stuff.

How does it work?.It's fast & simple:
Step 1: Briefly describe the project. Select some preferred skills, estimate the hours needed, and set a deadline.
Steph 2: Get matched with a Lightner (a vetted, capable, competent college student) within 24hrs. You can approve or deny.
Step 3: Create a quick narrated screenshare that shows how to do the work. We recommend Loom. No meeting necessary 👍
Step 4: Get short, proactive updates each day without needing to ask.
At the end of the project, you and your Lightner give each other a rating. We use ratings to make better matches, help Lightners improve, and keep the experience great for everyone.

Hmm...I still have more questions.

Protecting Your Data

Keeping confidential data safe & secure is Lightn's highest priority.Security is at our core, and we adhere to a 7-part commitment:1. We only source students who come recommended and pass our rigorous, proprietary vetting process.
2. We perform back-channel reference checks on all students.
3. Every Lightner signs an NDA with us that legally prohibits them from sharing or disclosing sensitive information.
4. If your company has security documents that interns are typically required to sign and abide by, you can require that of your Lightner.
5. Our team is happy to jump on Zoom to share best practices, and walk you through how to use tools like Dashlane & 1password that allow you to grant & remove access without sharing passwords.
6. We can arrange for sensitive work to be done and secure cloud workspaces with the sessions recorded.
7. We have a "One-Strike" policy; if a Lightner is careless with sensitive info and we hear about it, he or she is removed from the platform.
We feel compelled to add that Lightn's "sweet spot" are small, simple tasks that (usually) don’t contain much sensitive information. If a particular project requires utmost levels of sensitivity & confidentiality, it may still make sense to keep it in-house.
